Sorry we disappeared for a couple of weeks but unfortunately Darrin had to get an emergency minor procedure. He is doing fine now but may have to undergo one more surgery in the next few weeks. We did not have a chance to let everyone know beforehand because it happened as an emergency. We apologize for not letting you all know sooner. Thank you all so much for all the e-mails and phone calls. It will be quite some time we can go through the amount of e-mails and such but we will do our best. He has a few appointments this week so we will be making a slow comeback. Again Darrin is okay now and hopefully will be doing his 1st post in the next few days. Thank you so much again for all of your support and concern.
We hope you all are doing well and we will see you all, very soon.
PS: Our December's contest is unfortunately cancelled and all the entries thus far, will be entered into January's contest instead. Thank you all so much for understanding.
It's the Holiday season and sadly there is another scam involving Bulldog puppies going around on the online community. There are many scams around this time of year, so please be extra cautious. The scam pasted below bothers immensely because they prey on animal lovers and people who are looking to adopt/rescue puppies. They make a bad name for the shelters worldwide who have numerous pets that truly need a home.
There are many versions of this e-mail scam going around but this is the latest one we received today. They will also use any type of breed in their scams. Also please note, they will usually make spelling errors on purpose, so it does not seem like a computer generated scam and it comes off as more personal.
Please be aware of the scam pasted below:
Hi,
My name is Carrie Osborne co-manager of the Animal Care Shelter, our mission is to provide temporary care and shelter for stray, abandoned and relinquished animals, and to place as many as possible into responsible and caring homes.
We also works to create awareness and support for the humane treatment of all animals and to end animal overpopulation through education and the promotion of spaying and neutering.
We are currenly full with no more rooms for new arrivals and now looking for urgent foster and adoption homes for a group of bulldog puppies and 2 adults.
They are a product of puppy mill confiscate by the animal control and brought to our shelter for help.
If you are interested to be a foster or adoption parent for any of these dogs, please contact me immediately.
Thank you,
Carrie Osborne. Co-Manager. Animal Care Shelter Tel/Fax:- 63-200-983-546
If you live in or around that country code (which we believe to be in the Philippines), please contact the proper authorities and help put a stop to this immediately!
Please also e-mail this warning to your friends and family before more people become victims of these type of scams. Thank you all so much and God Bless.
Unlikely lads: Chance, a ten-week-old blind alsatian puppy, plays with Louis in the garden of their home in Norfolk
Love is blind for Alsatian puppy Chance and Louis the cat - the sightless new best friends By NICK MCDERMOTT Mail Online
Born completely blind and shunned by his owners, Chance had a tough start to life.
But thanks to the generosity of two Daily Mail readers, the ten-week-old alsatian puppy has finally been given the loving home he deserves.
And he's already made a best friend - a ten-year-old blind cat called Louis.
Glenn Crossman and his wife Sheridan adopted Chance after reading about his plight in the Mail last month.
The couple were already providing a home to a rescue dog - a four and half year old alsatian called Bella - and Louis.
They had their home and garden made secure after a previous pet, a labrador named Gizmo, became blind.
Their experience with blind animals has helped Chance settle in without a hitch at their home in Norfolk.
Mr Crossman, 54, said: "He's truly a lovely puppy and a bundle of fun. It only took him an hour to figure out the layout of the house. He's a very bright boy.
"The big advantage with being born blind like Chance is that he doesn't have to adapt to his condition - as he doesn't know any better. He just gets to know his way around and gets on with it."
The couple adopted Chance from Wood Green Animal Shelter in Godmanchester, Cambridgeshire, where he was taken after birth.
Mr Crossman, a mortgage broker, said looking after a blind pet has its own particular challenges.
"You have to be his eyes and ears, using voice commands to encourage and guide him.
"You just have to be a bit more aware of what they are up to and warn them if they are about to bound into a wall or door, or if there's a pothole out on a walk.
"But people should rescue disabled animals, as they are just as rewarding."
Thank you so much for submitting this heartwarming story Debbie!
The unwanted horses seemed destined for death. The wheels had been set in motion to put down about 2,000 healthy mustangs, those in a federally maintained herd of wild horses and burros that no one wanted to adopt.
The Bureau of Land Management knew that euthanasia was a legal alternative, but officials were proceeding slowly, afraid of an intense public outcry. The wild horses had become too expensive to maintain, and cattlemen argued that turning them loose would be a drain on the already scarce grazing lands of the West.
Then yesterday, at a public hearing in Reno, Nev., to discuss the issue, a solution arrived on a white horse, so to speak.
Madeleine Pickens, wife of billionaire T. Boone Pickens, made known her intentions to adopt not just the doomed wild horses but most or all of the 30,000 horses and burros kept in federal holding pens. Lifelong animal lovers, the Pickenses just a few years ago led the fight to close the last horse slaughterhouse in the United States.
Madeleine Pickens is looking for land in the West that would be an appropriate home for the horses.
She is working with the BLM staff to adopt the horses, said Henri Bisson, the bureau's deputy director, while the agency persuades Congress to shift $20 million in funding to feed and protect the horses now in captivity for another year. As backup to Pickens's offer, he said, two other groups, both animal rescue organizations, have expressed similar interest in adoption. "We are very hopeful that euthanasia won't be necessary this year," he said.
The news that Pickens and others intend to adopt the wild horses and burros was celebrated by animal rights groups, several of which were preparing legal challenges to prevent the government from putting the horses to death. ad_icon
"Of course, I'm thrilled, obviously, that these horses are getting a reprieve," said Shelley Sawhook, president of the American Horse Defense Fund. "At the same time, we need to address the basic issue of how these animals got in this position in the first place."
I have said it before and I will say it again, we can do amazing things when our hearts are full of such passion.
Thank you so very much for sending in this amazing story Glenda!
These two cute Guinea pigs are training for the pet Olympics! There is a horrific picture that should go with this post but none of us had the heart to post it. It was too brutal and heartbreaking, so we went with the Guinea pigs instead.
We just wanted to make a few announcements and explain why we haven't updated the blog in the last few days. We have been so busy working with our good friend Jaimie, from thoughtfurpaws, plus many other animal organizations & animal activists. We have been doing everything we can to stop a shelter in Utah from their plans on building a gas chamber, to perform euthanasia, on all their unwanted pets. This method as you all know is barbaric and considered to be cruel by every other animal organization and true animal lover.
We have spoken with the mayor and one of their council members several times over the last few days, trying our best to put a stop to this. Tomorrow we have two phone calls to make that will hopefully join all the animal organizations, activists and animal lovers, that are involved in this fight. We will keep you posted on the progress. For everyone who has written to them to voice your opinion on the matter, we applaud you and thank you so very much. In case anyone else wishes to help make a difference we will provide the mayors e-mail below and the council members. If you write an e-mail to one you can just copy and paste it to each one, if you wish.
The mayor Russ Wall seems to be a caring man who really wants whats best for these animals. The only problem is that the shelters director, Kelly Davis, is doing everything he can to prove his point, that using gas chambers as a form of euthanasia is painless and good for the pets. I have argued every false claim he has made with facts from the AVMA, HSUS, ASPCA and many other animal organizations. The problem is we are not there and he is doing everything he can to mislead the mayor and council members.
He or someone even had the audacity to make the mayor witness 7 acts of euthanasia to prove her/their point. The huge problem is, that that person did it by intentionally performing lethal injection euthanasia, against AVMA's recommended methods. The shelter out there made him watch one gas chamber euthanasia that apparently went well and quickly. Experts we have spoken to( After they have seen all the facts and e-mails) all agree that he or whomever was responsible, may have used such a high dose to ensure no complication. Which no shelter could afford to do when nobody is watching. Then the shelter performed 6 euthanasia's by lethal injections and half or more of them by way of abdominal injections. Which is not a recommended way of lethal injection by every animal organization, because of the extended length of time it takes for death to occur and the possible chance of any unnecessary pain. It is a known fact, that all animals being euthanized by lethal injection should be done so intravenously.
What kind of fair argument is this shelter trying to prove by comparing one method with 1 example compared to 6 examples using the other method?! What this shelter did to these poor dogs & cats on purpose to try and prove their point, should be considered severe cruelty or even murder. They intentionally made those poor animals suffer more, so they can continue to build a gas chamber. Shelters worldwide are known to favor gas chambers because only one staff member is needed for this type of torture, compared to two employees needed for lethal injections. This is an outrage and we cannot allow them to get away with this!
This is the Mayors last statement to us after he viewed what a shelter( We do not know which one at this time) wanted and ill intentionally caused him to see.
"Bottom line for me is that after two days of observation, and after reading much information (and disinformation), and after much discussion with the people who have to deal with this regularly, I believe that most euthanasia procedures could and perhaps should be done by lethal injection. But there are many times when that form of euthanasia causes much more stress on animals (and human handlers) than a 15-30 second procedure in a CO chamber. I know many people may disagree but I saw what I saw and pray to God that I never have to do see any form of euthanasia again."
Just for the record the AVMA states that some pets have been known to take as long as 14 minutes to pass away, with this cruel form of euthanasia! On top of that it is also a known fact that some pets survive all that suffering and then must be put down by other methods. Include all that, the added pain and risks to health staff and you have to wonder why any shelter, that is supposed to love animals more then anyone, would want to do such cruelty. The reasons know worldwide are saving money with only having to use one technician and because they can cram many animals in the gas chamber at one time. Talk about cruel and barbaric reasons!!!!!
We also pointed out something very important to the mayor. We asked him if he owned a restaurant and knew the inspector was visiting a certain day, would your restaurant not be in tip top shape? That's what this shelter was doing because they knew that if they wanted to continue using their gas chamber, they had to make it seem to be the best choice and make lethal injection look horrible. There have been a number of studies done by the AVMA & HSUS, ASPCA etc... and all of them agree that lethal injections are the safest, stress free, painless, fastest and most humane method of euthanasia.
Please voice your opinion on this shelters plan and of this form of euthanasia, to the following;
To voice any strong oppositions and to tell the Shelters Operations director, Kelly Davis, how barbaric his plans are for planning on using this form of euthanasia, then here is his contact info.
Kelly Davis Operations Director, Animal Services West Valley City 4063 South 7200 West West Valley City, UT. 84044 (801) 963-3364 Office (801) 252-7541 FAX kdavis@wvc-ut.gov
To contact the mayor( who is a very nice man) directly to voice your opinion, then here is his contact information.
The nicest person we spoke to thus far is Corey Rushton but the more opposition to this shelters plan, the better it is, for those poor animals. Here is his info.
Our good friends over at ThoughtsFurPaws.com have brought a horrible story to our attention. We cannot believe how barbaric this shelter in Utah is. They are in the mist of building a gas chamber to euthanize pets! In our opinion that is unbelievably cruel & consider it to be plain old barbaric. Even though we are very opposed to Kill shelters, there is such a more human way of doing it.
We urge you to please take a moment and write a letter to this shelter and voice your opinion. Even if it's just a sentence or two, which can take a minute or less, that would be a huge help. We are in the mist of writing a very detailed letter as well as Jaimie at Thought Fur Paws, so if you wish to copy and paste either one, please just e-mail either of us. I am attaching part of the original post below and to view the entire post please click Here.
A ThoughtsFurPaws reader sent me an email yesterday and I think the topic is worth bringing up here. When I saw the subject line my heart sank. It said: “West Valley City, Utah-Animal Shelter Gas Chamber.” Although I don’t live in Utah or anywhere near where this is occuring, I nonetheless would like to draw attention to this matter.
The reader writes, “I was unaware that the West Valley City Animal Shelter was going to have a gas chamber in their new facility to kill innocent animals. I am completely appalled about it and I think that you should be too. Animals are living and breathing just like you and me. I wouldn’t want someone to do that to me or any other living thing. It’s one thing to euthanize an animal with a shot. It’s another thing to put live animals in a chamber, close the door and turn on the gas and KILL THEM. Who would think of such a cruel way to kill an animal? Why would the Mayor allow this to happen? This is MURDER! This is CRUEL! This is WRONG! Please help do something about it before it’s too late and they take the lives of innocent animals.”
I must say that I agree with this reader. Although her statements are harsh and a little brutal, they are true. It IS cruel and it IS like murder. I shudder at the thought…
A further note in the email is from another concerned citizen reaching out to animal advocates. She says:
You may be aware that the new West Valley City Animal Shelter, currently under construction, will have a gas chamber for euthanasia. This is not a quick, painless or humane death for our animals that society has discarded.
Over 2,400 dogs and cats are euthanized at just this one shelter in a year. The Humane Society of the United States, the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the American Humane Association, and the National Animal Control Association have all determined injection of sodium pentobarbital is the most humane, safest, least stressful and most professional means of euthanasia. Lethal injection is slightly less expensive than carbon monoxide gas chambers and does not entail the inherent human health hazards of the gas.
*We urge you to email, write or call all the elected officials in West Valley City and Taylorsville to register your objections to the installation of the euthanasia gas chamber at the new West Valley City Animal Shelter as soon as possible. Timing is critical. Once the gas lines are installed it will be too late for them to reconsider.
Contact information is listed at the bottom of this email. Your personalized message will be even more powerful. Please be respectful in your communications.
*The following dates are for council meetings at West Valley City and Taylorsville. Please mark these on your calendars and plan to attend. If you are a citizen of West Valley City or Taylorsville, we would appreciate you making a brief statement at the meetings. Please contact me for “talking points” or additional information.
*West Valley City – November 18 – 6:30 pm – City Council Chambers, West Valley City Hall, 3600 Constitution Boulevard, West Valley City. 801-963-3203
For more information, please contact Marylin Segall at 801-949-5991.
*Taylorsville – November 19 – 6:30 pm – 2600 West Taylorsville Boulevard, Taylorsville. 801-963-5400
Thank you all so much and God Bless.
Big thanks go out to Jaimie at Thoughtfurpaws.com for originally posting this horrific shelters plan and for bringing it to our attention.
We would like to introduce you to our good friends Gary and Lisa Silverglat, from M'Shoogy's Emergency Animal Rescue, located in Savannah Missouri. They are a NO-KILL animal sanctuary that has been dedicated to saving the lives of abandoned, injured and abused animals for almost 20 years. In that time they have saved over 15,000 animals from certain death!
Their animal sanctuary also helps rehabilitate wildlife, hosts educational tours, runs an adoption center and even has a low cost veterinary clinic. They are truly an amazing couple who have done all this, from just donations, volunteers and mostly using their own life savings.
We can do great things when our hearts are full of such passion!
We were fortunate enough to have Gary and Lisa take some time away from the extremely busy schedule, to grant us an interview. We cannot thank them enough for giving us such an honor. With the help of some of our dear members we asked them the following questions, to try and understand what it truly takes to be such devoted animal lovers.
1.How did you both get started in animal rescue?
Lisa and I have
both always loved animals and hated to see so many homeless and
unwanted. When we purchased our farm 23 years ago, stray and dumped
animals started showing up almost immediately. We knew we wanted to
help these animals, so we began building kennels to house and care for
them. Within four years, we were caring for 750 animals on our farm. We
never specifically intended to start a rescue, but there was a need and
so it just happened – they came and we built!
2. What or who inspires you both to do rescue work, as we know it's not easy?
We
are inspired by the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of
the animals that are entrusted to us. As long as there are homeless
animals, there will continue to be a need for us to help in any way we
can.
3. What is your philosophy for caring and rescuing animals?
We
are a no-kill facility because we believe that life is sacred
regardless of species, age or size. All animals that we rescue have a
home for life with us if a suitable adoptive family is not found for
them.
4. What does a typical day at M’Shoogy's look like for you?
Daily
chores begin at 6AM and continue throughout the day and well into the
evening. All the animals are fed and watered and medications are given
to the animals that need them. All pens are cleaned, and necessary
repairs and maintenance are performed as needed.
M’Shoogy’s
receives as many as 100 inquiry telephone calls per day which are
handled and answered by Lisa and I. We often receive emergency calls
from law enforcement officials or state wildlife conservation regarding
injured and abandoned animals that require immediate rescue and medical
attention. Frequently, these calls come in the middle of the night, so
it’s not unusual for us to get out of bed to go on such a mission.
During
business hours, Lisa and I also manage/oversee the low cost veterinary
clinic that we started on our property in 2002 called Angels Vet
Express. In addition, after the clinic closes each evening, Lisa and I
monitor and care for all the animals staying overnight. This includes
those that are recovering from surgery and/or are being treated for
serious illnesses that require hospitalization.
So, to say the least, our schedule is a little crazy. Basically, our commitment to the animals is 24/7, 365 days per year.
5. Of all the different types of animals you have, which do you consider requiring the most care?
Overall,
orphaned infants require the most care because they are unable to feed
themselves and therefore are totally dependent upon us. Springtime is
an especially busy time for us because we are inundated with orphaned
wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, rabbits, birds, etc. Most of these
orphans need to be bottle-fed every few hours around the clock for up
to eight weeks. Once they are eating on their own, they are released
back into the wild where they belong. It’s very rewarding to see that
all our labor has finally paid off when we can release these young
critters back into the wild and know that they are thriving on their
own, the way nature intended.
Baby orphaned dogs and cats
require the same constant around the clock care if we are not able to
find a suitable surrogate to care for them.
6. Tell us more about Angels Vet Express.
Lisa
and I started Angels so that the animals at M’Shoogy’s would have
on site veterinary care and the general public would have access to low
cost care for their pets. We believe that all animals deserve the best
possible healthcare at the lowest cost. So our low cost prices are
available to everyone without restrictions, qualifications or
limitations. Angels offers spay/neuter surgeries, general veterinary
care, prescription medications, products and food at significantly
reduced rates. We do our best to treat any species of animals that
comes through our doors. We publish our price list online at
www.mshoogys.com/angelsvetpdf.pdf and all net profits from Angels go
directly to care for the animals at M’Shoogy’s.
7. What are your daily expenditures to maintain and feed over 700 animals?
In
recent years, we unfortunately have had to scale down the number of
animals that we take in due to financial constraints which means that
an average of 30 animals per day must be turned away. Currently, we
have approx. 400 animals we are caring for and the daily costs total
around $500. This is for their general care only (food, water, shelter)
and excludes medication.
8. How can people help (organizing fundraisers, bake sales, volunteering, rummage sales, sponsors, auctions)?
Giving
monetary donations to M’Shoogy’s would be the most helpful thing that
people can do. Lisa and I want to insure that M’Shoogy’s will go on
long past our life times and the only way this will happen is if
M’Shoogy’s can operate on it’s own and pull in enough money to continue
providing for all the animals. For the past 23 years, the majority of
the money needed to care for the animals has come from Lisa and I, as
the donations we receive are less than 10% of the money required to run
M’Shoogy’s. We are getting older and the crazy pace is catching up with
us and our financial resources are dwindling. We are hopeful that
people will recognize the need for M’Shoogy’s to carry on indefinitely
and therefore be willing to donate money to make it happen. M’Shoogy’s
is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, so all donations are tax
deductible as allowed by law.
9. If the readers of this interview could grant you one wish, what would it be?
Loving
homes for all pets so that there is no longer a need to have facilities
of our kind to take in animals that are abused, neglected or abandoned.
Unfortunately M'Shoogy's has fallen under very hard times and they
are running extremely low on donations and also volunteers. They
really need us true animal lovers to help them continue saving the
lives of so many of our furry little friends. If you live within
driving distance, we beg of you to stop by whenever you can and simply lend a
hand. We promise you that it is one of most rewarding feelings in
life, when you volunteer at an animal rescue org.
If you
don't live in the vicinity you can still help them out so much by
donating, which will help feed and care for the animals. I know times
are hard for most of us with the economy the way it is but even a few
dollars can make a huge difference. Please remember that they are a 501(C)(3) Charitable organization, so all donations are tax deductible!
You can easily donate via PayPal or check by clicking Here!
If you wish to volunteer or to take advantage of for their low cost vet service, their contact information is below.
We would like to also thank one of M'shoogy's devoted volunteers, Shari, for helping us get the interview. She has a heart of gold and is truly a best friend to all animals & animal lovers around the world. We would also like to truly thank Debbie, Jay and also Glenda for coming up with some great questions, for the interview.
